San Francisco is a city in the US state of California. It is the fourth most populated city in California and the 14th most populated city in the United States. In 2008 it was home to more than 800.000 people and looking at the metropolitan area, 7.2 million people live in the region.
To the west, San Francisco is bounded by the Pacific Ocean, to the east by San Francisco Bay and to the north by the Golden Gate.
The name of the city has Spanish origins. San Francisco was settled by the Spanish in 1776, establishing a fort at the Golden Gate. This mission was named for the holy Francis of Assisi. In 1848, the California Gold Rush propelled the city into a period of rapid growth. It then became the largest city on the West Coast of the US. The city was almost completely destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire.
Nowadays, San Francisco is a popular destination for tourists. It is famous for the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, cable cars, Chinatown, and its steep rolling hills.
